Mixed media art is a bold and expressive form of visual storytelling that merges multiple artistic techniques and materials. What is Mixed Media Art?

Mixed media art combines different materials and artistic methods into a single, cohesive composition. Instead of sticking to just paint or pencil, artists blend:

  • Painting: Acrylics, inks, oils, or watercolours 🖌️
  • Drawing: Charcoal, pastels, markers, or graphite ✏️
  • Collage: Paper, fabric, photographs, or ephemera 📰
  • Texture elements: Modelling paste, gesso, or found objects 🌿
  • Printmaking: Monoprints, stamps, or screen printing 🖨️
  • Digital art: Photography or digital elements merged with hand-done work 💻

This approach creates layered, multidimensional artworks full of depth and expression.

  • Collage – Layering cut or torn materials like paper and fabric 📜
  • Assemblage – Building 3D compositions with found items 🧩
  • Altered Books – Repurposing books into narrative art pieces 📚
  • Textile Art – Combining fabrics, stitching, and paint 🧵
  • Encaustic Art – Using wax for texture and luminosity 🕯️

Why Wet Strength Tissue Paper is a Game-Changer 💡

Our wet strength tissue paper is specially designed to retain durability and integrity even when soaked with glue, paint, or water. This makes it an ideal surface for:

  • Collage: Easily layered with glue or gel medium
  • Printmaking: Strong enough for mono-print pulls and stamping
  • Textile work: Can be stitched, dyed, or manipulated without tearing

It’s perfect for artists who love pushing boundaries and need a paper that can go the distance. 💪

Rachel Gabriel (@rachelgabriel_art) – Based in Oxford, UK.

Rachel Gabriel is a mixed media artist inspired by the great outdoors that she rarely gets to see any more after contracting Long Covid in 2020. Her imagined semi-abstract landscapes are rich with colour, texture, and energy, and have been described as “bursting with volcanic colour under bold blue skies.” Working in acrylic, pencil, ink, collage, gelli prints, and our wet strength tissue paper, she works in layers and sands back to reveal hidden textures beneath. “If I had used regular tissue paper, it would’ve disintegrated but Carnival’s paper has the strength to cope with paint, multiple layers, printing and even an electric sander,” she explains. In one piece, she layered book text beneath tissue and painted over it with translucent glazes, letting the underlying words subtly shine through.

📍 Rachel will be exhibiting from May 3–11 2025 as part of Oxfordshire Art Weeks at Conway’s Opticians, George Street, Oxford. Mon–Sat 11am–6pm, Sun 11am–5pm.

Kim Hamburg - Never Have I Ever

Kim Hamburg is an award-winning Mixed Media Collage Artist who elevates her work through the addition of rich textures and bold colours. She experiments with stencils, thick paints, and colour layering—often modifying mediums like super thick paint with her own hues. Kim uses our wet strength tissue paper across scrap paper, watercolour paper, and in-progress mixed media pieces to create dynamic, textured compositions.

As Kim explains, “The main reason I love your papers is that when used with the right medium they go on transparently. They also layer wonderfully on top of other media—you can even layer wet strength paper on top of wet strength paper.” She also runs our paper through her printer and uses it with a range of techniques, including gelli printing.

Cat Lee - Dungeness Power Station 2024

Cat Lee is a mixed media artist who explores the expressive potential of combining diverse materials, including acrylic paints, acrylic glazes, oil and cold wax, and ephemeral collage elements. Her creative process is deeply layered, both visually and conceptually. She often prepares wet strength tissue paper by printing images directly onto it, taking full advantage of its durability and translucency. These printed tissues are then skilfully embedded into her richly textured compositions, where they interact with layers of paint, wax, and found materials to create works that are immersive, tactile, and emotionally resonant.
